WikiLeaks also shared emails from then-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin that it received from an anonymous source in September In early December , Assange discovered that he had other legal problems to worry about. Since early August, he had been under investigation by the Swedish police for allegations that included two counts of sexual molestation, one count of illegal coercion, and one count of rape.
Following a series of extradition hearings in early to appeal the warrant, Assange learned on November 2, , that the High Court dismissed his appeal. Still on conditional bail, Assange made plans to appeal to the U. Supreme Court. That August, Assange was granted political asylum by the Ecuadorean government, which, according to the Times , "protects Mr. Assange from British arrest, but only on Ecuadorean territory, leaving him vulnerable if he tries to leave the embassy to head to an airport or train station.
The article went on to say that the decision "cited the possibility that Mr. Assange could face 'political persecution' or be sent to the United States to face the death penalty," putting further strain on the relationship between Ecuador and Britain, and instigating a rebuttal from the Swedish government.
In August the lesser sexual assault allegations from — with the exception of rape — were dropped due to statute of limitation violations by Swedish prosecutors. The statue of limitations on the rape allegations will expire in In February , a United Nations panel determined that Assange had been arbitrarily detained, and recommended his release and compensation for deprivation of liberty.
However, both the Swedish and British governments rejected those findings as non-binding, and reiterated that Assange would be arrested if he left the Ecuadorian embassy. On May 19, , Sweden said it would drop its rape investigation of Assange. Assange was granted Ecuadorian citizenship in December , but his relationship with his adopted country soon soured.
In March , the government cut off his internet access on the grounds that his actions endangered "the good relations that the country maintains with the United Kingdom, with the rest of the states of the European Union, and other nations.
Alan Rusbridger, who edited the Guardian when it worked with Assange, believes that extraditing him to the US has worrying implications. Rusbridger says the Assange case is particularly dangerous because it comes at a time when so many countries are legislating to outlaw reporting about national security.
Boris Johnson has dismissed a Law Commission recommendation that the public interest should be a defence under the Official Secrets Act and has proposed that the government would no longer have to prove that harm had been done by any disclosures. In other words, investigative journalism could be recast as spying. Few journalists who worked with Assange will defend everything he has done. However, virtually all of them, including those he had feuds with, have now come out fighting for him.
Mr Assange is no hero. But this case now represents a threat to freedom of expression and, with it, the resilience of American democracy itself. Moris says she is sick of these mealy-mouthed defences. She suggests that mainstream news organisations jumped at the opportunity of working with WikiLeaks, then distanced themselves from him as soon as the going got tough.
The future of living in a free and open society is at stake. Moris is exceptionally bright. But at times she also seems naive — as much the disciple of Assange as his partner. Although Moris and the boys have the right to stay in the UK, Assange could still be deported to Australia. I notice she is wearing a necklace with three tiny hearts on it. Julian and the two boys.
