What does keyboard failure mean

I saw somewhere on dell. I am having the same problem as the original poster - fixed a "frozen" situation by restarting, now get "keyboard failure" at boot on my XPS purchased in Jan Seems like this is a common problem out there for Dell's. Problem is definitely not the keyboard as it works on a laptop. No USB ports work, therefore can't do any diagnostics by keyboard. Tried to "flash the bios" as suggested elsewhere on the 'net by playing with the jumper blocks. If keyboard works, you have a software failure.

If not, you have motherboard or keyboard failure. Have you tried this keyboard on another PC or another keyboard on this PC? Power off and disconnect PC from the wall. Open the case and remove the battery from the motherboard.

Leave it that way for a couple of hours or even overnight. Reinstall the battery right-side up! Nothing different happens upon using the CD. Keyboard definitely works. Have removed the battery previously, though not for hours, and no change. I suspect it's the motherboard though I'm angry that it would go after less than 3 years of not very heavy use. Can't figure out the part for the motherboard in order to see how much it would cost to replace it. Suggestions on how to find the part?

Can one write directly to the liasions here to get their attention - as I've said before and as you can see from this thread alone, this is a widespread problem deserving of Dell's attention.

If you are facing a trouble in your keyboard all of the sudden then check for the updates. There is a possibility that your system is may be in need of a driver update. Go and visit the manufacturer website for an software update, if there is any then go ahead and install them immediately. If there are certain keys that are not working properly or becoming unresponsive slowly then dust can be a reason behind that failure.

Turn the keyboard upside down to release the dust off from the keyboard. If that does not work, then buy a jet spray to get the job done for the same issue. Every system has a set of operating systems on which the keyboard layout depends on. If you are tapping a particular key and ending up getting the totally opposite letter on screen then the system is might be using the different keyboard layout possibly. Keyboard is not one of the sensitive device which get failed so quickly. You can work on a same keyboard as long as you want without any replacement.

Keep all of these points in mind whenever you face keyboard failure. If the issue do not get resolved then you might need to purchase the new keyboard imemdiately.

I selected "Show Hidden Devices" and the keyboard appears. It also says: Currently, this device is not connected to the computer Code 45 ". I tried the troubleshooting button, but I I don't like following those instructions because it says that I should try first un-installing the driver and then re-booting to let Windows detect hardware and install the drivers.

I wouldn't find them on either MS or Dell's websites because of this system's age. I then selected "Update Driver". The hardware wizard pops up to give two options: to install the CD, or allow to install using Windows Updates. I selected install CD using the manufacturer's disc that came with the PC.

The wizard said it couldn't find it, and it says to click troubleshoot. I'll attach a screen shot of the keyboard driver in Device Manage in my next reply while running in Normal mode. The moderator helped me to clean my system. My keyboard issue existed before the system was cleaned, so malware is not the issue. I don't know if there's a reason again under this forum, i. Nor do I understand why it would be done. Posted 26 February - AM.

Worth a shot but may not work. Shutdown, pull your power cord, and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Replace your power cord. See if your keyboard works in BIOS.

There's potentially a couple of unknown variables here involved when resetting the BIOS settings to default. The default settings may not match the BIOS settings when my system was configured from the factory. Potentially, the settings could have been changed from the default settings predicated upon:. Optional hardware that was installed on my system.

This system was purchased back when I had many hardware options to add from Dell. I would have no way of telling whether or not the optional hardware that I custom configured with my purchase from the factory could have rendered factory changes to the default settings for BIOS A Settings changes could also have been configured from the factory based on Dell customer feedback prior to my purchase.

Keeping these in mind, It would be best to my advantage knowing how to re-set all my BIOS settings back to their factory recommended settings. I would not feel comfortable if I had to adjust the settings with script if I learned there was a requirement to re-set settings to a desired value after the BIOS non-factory default was completed.
